How To Calm The Fear Of Speaking By Knowing Yourself.

We are creatures of habit and fear can become a habit in Public Speaking. To overcome it the first step is knowing yourself.

Step one: Go to a quiet place in which there is little or no distraction. A quiet room or the corner table of a coffee shop are my best thinking places. Bring a pen and paper to jot down your thoughts.

Step two: Think back on times when you felt nervous and write them down. Get specific. Here are a list of questions that may help you jog your memory: • What was going on? • Who was around you? • What were the circumstances? • How old were you? • Where you familiar with the topic? • Did the unknown cause the stress?

Step three: Once you have jotted down 4 or 5 instances, look for reoccurring themes. Again, here are some questions: • Was there a type of people or size of group that were similar in each instance? • Did you feel rushed consistently in each? • Were you prepared?

Step four: Deal with each of these patterns head on and be aware of them as you go to speak. Mentally be ready for those feelings of nervousness to creep in and tell yourself, “I’m ready to stare this one in the face.”
